As Gekko Systems reflects on three decades of innovation, one milestone stands out as a defining moment in our evolution: the 2006 Highly Commended Award for Minerals Processing Plant of the Year for the processing plant installed at the Ballarat Gold Mine. This recognition marked more than an industry accolade, it signalled the emergence of a new era in gold processing, shaped by Gekko’s commitment to efficiency, modularity, and smarter resource use.

Gekko Systems Ballarat Gold Mine

When the Ballarat Gold Mine sought a processing solution capable of delivering strong recoveries with a smaller environmental footprint, Gekko responded with a design that challenged convention. The plant integrated a robust gravity circuit, intensive leaching, and low energy comminution, creating a flowsheet that was compact, efficient, and engineered for performance.

The installation demonstrated the power of lean, modular design, a philosophy that would go on to influence Gekko’s global projects for years to come. The plant’s success reinforced the idea that smarter, more agile processing solutions could deliver both economic and environmental benefits, long before sustainability became a mainstream industry priority.

Proudly Ballarat made and Australian designed, the plant showcased the depth of technical capability within regional Victoria. It was a moment of pride for the Gekko team, a demonstration that world class innovation can be engineered locally and deployed with global impact.

The award also recognised the collaboration between Gekko and the Ballarat Gold Mine, highlighting a shared commitment to operational excellence and continuous improvement. The plant’s performance over the years has validated the strength of that partnership and the enduring value of the design.

The Ballarat plant embodied the principles that continue to guide Gekko today:
