As Gekko Systems marks its 30‑year anniversary, we’re reflecting on the milestones that have shaped our identity as a global leader in smart, low‑impact mineral processing. Among these achievements, one stands out as a powerful symbol of our commitment to environmental responsibility: the 2012 Environmental Excellence Award, presented by Mining Magazine for the work of Gekko’s Cyanide (CN) Detox Group.
In the decade leading up to the award, Gekko had already established a reputation for designing highly capital‑efficient, low‑energy flowsheets that reduced environmental footprint through gangue rejection and pre‑concentration. But in 2012, our technical team identified a critical opportunity to further support the industry: improving cyanide detoxification practices.
Cyanide detoxification is essential for safe, responsible gold processing. When poorly managed, it poses significant risks to ecosystems, communities and operations. Recognising this, Gekko formed the CN Detox Group, bringing together global expertise from our teams in Australia, Canada, Chile and South Africa and partnering with cyanide detox pioneer Randy Agius, whose 32 years of experience and 120+ global installations shaped the foundation of modern detoxification technology.
The Environmental Excellence Award was more than a recognition of technical capability. It validated a philosophy that has guided Gekko for three decades: that smarter ideas can, and should, reduce environmental impact while improving operational outcomes.
