A number of coal companies have approached Gekko looking for a cost-effective method to increase throughput and/or improve recovery in their coal preparation plants.

As a result, Gekko commenced an R&D program into the use of the InLine Pressure Jig (IPJ) as a Coal Separator in 2007. The research to date has shown that the modified version of the IPJ, aptly named the Gekko IPJ3500 Coal Separator, offers real benefits to the coal washing process. 

Leading coal processing consultants, Australian Laboratory Services/ACIRL and Elsa Consulting Group Pty Ltd (ECG) are working with Gekko’s Technical Team on pilot and plant trials.

Andrew Vince, of Elsa Consulting Group, believes the Gekko IPJ Coal Separator has potential in the coal industry to operate more effectively than teetered bed separators/spirals/reflux classifiers due to its controllable jigging action.

Additionally, its ability to process coarse, as well as mid-sized, coal could allow larger diameter dense medium cyclones to be installed by overcoming breakaway size limitations. This could open opportunities for coal preparation plants to reduce magnetite consumption, as well as increase overall plant recoveries.
